4 Design Tips to Help Organize Your Home

A clean home makes a clean mind. In fact, research shows that people are more productive and feel calmer when their space is organized. With the busy holiday season behind us, the beginning of the new year is a perfect time to take stock of your home and set new goals.

As a home designer and renovator, I find that your home’s design can play a pivotal role in your organization. Here are 4 design tips to help you organize your home in 2022.

Declutter Your Decor

Before you start throwing things out of drawers and closets, take a 360-degree look at your space. While it may sound counterintuitive, a lot of our clutter is surface level – including too many decorative pieces, things scattered on tables and chairs, and useful, if cumbersome, kitchen appliances.

Ask, what is important to keep out, and what could be put away to make your space more beautiful? When it comes to decorating, focus on larger statement accessories that make an impact rather than lots of smaller pieces that can build up and look like general clutter over time.

One more tip: Another way to “declutter” with design is using a consistent paint color and floor covering. It will make your home feel much more spacious while better highlighting your favorite décor pieces.

Invest in Stylish Organization Products

One of my favorite trends in recent years is the wide array of stylish clean-up tools, like large-lidded baskets and linen-covered boxes, that can act as both decor and storage. They’re especially great if you live in an apartment, condo, or home lacking in closet space.

Make sure to buy organizing products – whether baskets, bins, or boxes – that have a consistent color and look. Organizing products are also a great way to add texture into your home (one of the top home design trends of 2022). With options like wire, woven, cloth, and rope, they can add a nice tactile element in your rooms.

Get Creative with Shelving

If you simply don’t have enough storage in your home, you may decide to work with a renovator to transform your space. I often collaborate with clients on kitchen and bathroom renovation projects where adding more storage is a top priority. Installing pull-out cabinet shelves is a great way to bring more functionality to what you have, and one of the best ways to add space is by going vertical. Adding tall shelves, even in small spaces, can give you the storage you need to feel truly comfortable in your home.
