5 Home Decor Tips for the Summertime

A new season is the perfect opportunity to freshen up your home.

While we might not experience dramatic weather changes in Northeast Florida, we are now entering the hottest part of the year and our homes should be a comfortable place to escape the heat (at least when we want to). If the goal in winter is to create a place that feels cozy and warm, the objective in summer is to make your rooms feel fresh and light.

Here are my top tips for creating a comfortable, fresh-feeling home that is the ideal place to stay cool this summer.

Swap Your Pillows and Throws

One of the quickest ways to transform your space is to change your decorative textiles. Use lightweight linen or cotton pillows in softer blushes or brighter hues, such as sky blue, sage, or champagne. Put away any downy or rich-colored blankets for gauzy cotton blankets or lightweight throws in fresh colors. Not only will these accents brighten up your space, but they will allow you to stay cozy on the couch without feeling too hot.

Switch Out Curtains

Speaking of small tweaks that make a big impact, changing your curtains or shades can make your room feel brand-new. Think cotton or linen curtains in ticking stripes or a single neutral color. Window treatments should enhance your interior surroundings without hindering your view.

One thing I always tell my clients to avoid is heavy, focus-pulling drapery – it can create a “choppy” look and drag the whole room down.

Make Your Bed Cooler

Who doesn’t love a fluffy duvet? But if you’re throwing the covers off every night because it’s too hot, it’s time to dress the bed with simpler linens, such as plain white or light-colored sheets topped with a light, breathable blanket.

One extra great touch: add a throw or thin blanket at the foot of the bed. You’ll thank yourself when you want to take a nap or relax in bed without disturbing the sheets.

Decorate the Dining Table

Refresh your kitchen and dining area with summer-friendly décor and dinnerware. I love switching out plates, napkins, and dining table décor to reflect that fun summer feel. Think playfully patterned plates, colorful drinking glasses, and fresh flowers or succulents on the table.

Spruce Up With Natural Accents

As I mentioned in a previous blog, we are in an era where natural plants and textures are all the rage. There’s no better way to celebrate the natural beauty of the summer than by bringing it indoors – whether that’s flower bouquets, eucalyptus leaves, hand-picked seashells, or bowls filled with vibrant fruits like lemons and oranges.

In the end, summer décor is all about comfort, relaxation, and joy. Don’t be afraid to have some fun with your home!
